Moments is an app to transform journalism into a way that fits better with our today’s lives. Focus more on documentation and insights of your moments.

Moments – improving journalism

What problem I am solving and why?

Journalism is a good habit, is healthy and works like kind of therapy. Will let you achieve your goals and have a perspective of feedback on what you are doing, where you are going and what you need to improve.

I want to create a new way of journalism more creative that adapts to our up-to-date lifestyle, more modern and easy to fit in whatever style of communication you prefer.

I want to transform the journal into a documental, document your process, your path, your life.

So in the end, you will be more grateful and aware of the little details that you wouldn’t appreciate it before. Life is how we look it and how we think it – if we can improve that perspective we can improve our life.

Challenge

The challenge for this project was to create a whole new interface for an app from scratch, ideate solutions that effectively achieve its purpose. The process that I followed to make this project was Jobs-to-be-Done, some research and Design Sprint.

This time I don’t create Personas, instead I used Jobs Stories based on Jobs-to-be-Done, check this article if you want to know why I did this – Personas vs Jobs Stories. Which one for product design?

Jobs Stories

When I am performing my daily basis tasks or just doing things along the day, I want to document important moments that happen so I can remember them at the end of the day, week, month or even year.

Competitive Analysis

There is a lot of apps for the journalism market actually, some are good. The majority has free and premium features, but all of them focus on making one big entry of the day and some of them even try to make it faster like 5 minutes journal. I made a competitive analysis of two apps that I think are the best.

Moodboard

I went for something fresh and modern, the focus is journalism and that traditional style is pretty vintage with block notes and writing, but I want to take that into these days – A modern life that is clean, minimal and techy.

Colors

For the color palette, I choose blue as the main color and in companion with a lot of white space to give breath between elements – blue is peaceful, flexible and imaginative.

Design Sprint Process

With that previous research that I made, I decided to use the Design Sprints framework for making a good solution in a short time. Now let’s see some key outcomes of the Design Sprint.

Day 1: Defining the Challenge and Ideate Solutions

How Might We - Using Miro.

I decided that the main “How Might We” that I am going to focus on solutions in this sprint was Let the people save their moments (good and bad) through the day.

Long Term Goal and Sprint Questions.

The main goal for Moments that I want to be in two years, and what can be wrong to get to that desired spot.

User Journey Map.

Thanks to the map of the user journey and the HMWs I can appreciate what specific area I need to solve – in this case, it is in the “use” stage where the app comes to play a role. You can check the map in detail here.

Crazy 8s.

I iterate 8x the concept screen for today’s moments section.

Day 2: Decide and Storyboard

Concept Solution.

This was the winner concept (made in day 1) that I decided to come to prototype and test.

Concept Solution 2
Concept Solution 3

Its main idea was to have a quick view with scrolling of all the moments along the day, makes easy and fast access to actions like view a moment or add a new one. So I want something very minimal to make easy navigation. Speed is key because that will put away extra frictions and facilitate user adoption.

Concept Solution Change Screen
Add a moment - Screen.

I chose to change the “add a moment” screen in the winner concept because later I saw it overload – in the new version looks cleaner and with more space.

Storyboarding.

With the concept solution and storyboarding defined I’m ready to build the prototype with all the screens and visuals that I need to make.

Day 3: Prototype

High Fidelity Wireframes.
Final Visuals.

I used Adobe XD to build the visual prototype and InVision to make it usable and interactive – you can check the final prototype here.

Also, I used the prototype feature of Adobe XD and is pretty impressive even with animations, but for the practicality of testing, I still use InVision.

Day 4: Test

I test it to 5 users, and so far the solution achieves its goal, people found interesting the concept and with easy navigation, they think that privately documenting their life will give them a new perspective.

The “add a moment” process they found it intuitive and fast to create a new one.

They also liked the well-structured of moments in a day and the use of emojis in some places in the interface (make it more emotional and friendly).

One thing that they didn’t like was the section “moments” confuse them (the name) and it’s not clear at first sight of what is in it, so maybe I can solve this calling it “Story” or “Diary”.

And another thing that they didn’t like was that the menu wasn’t accessible from other sections like “Moments” or “Insights” and this perspective I think they are right, so adding the menu in main sections like these will be a right choice.

In general, it was a good test, I was testing the navigation and how easy will be adding a moment, also the overall concept.

Final Words

This concept is an idea that I want to make one day a reality, I’m very passionate about journalism and self-development and I think making the traditional journalism more oriented as this concept will give better insights and perspective of your life.

Still, I don’t see it as new journalism, just a plus to the actual journalism that is made once a day or more – with Moments you can document your life and at the end of the day adding a final text moment can work as a traditional journal entry.

I think we need to update the journalism to ours today’s modern lives. If one day I make this app I don’t pretend to become rich but if I can improve the life of someone else at least one person that would make me very happy 😊
